The New Astrology report
blends Western signs with Chinese signs and comes up with
144 "New" signs. If you are a Sagittarius and
were born in the OX year 1949, then you are a Sagittarius/Ox.
Simple. Take your regular, familiar astrological sign and
match it with the animal sign of the year you were born.
And you have found your New astrological sign.
Everybody has a dual nature.
Some people are naturally greedy and grasping about money.
But surprise! These same people can be generous to a fault
in emotional ways, strewing sentiment and affection on their
entourage like Santa Claus on a gift binge. People are complicated.
They baffle us with their contradictory behavior. We even
confuse ourselves with our own haunting ambivalences. How
come you get along with Jack and care so much about him
when in fact he gets on your nerves? Jack has an abrasive
personality. You know that. But you can't help liking the
guy. He fascinates you. Why? It's a dilemma. With a solution.
The New Astrology attempts
to help us understand human behavior within the universe
through the "marriage" of occidental and oriental
The Chinese have divided
time differently from us Westerners. Whereas we have 100-year
centuries, the Chinese have periods of sixty years. We divide
our centuries into ten decades. The Chinese divide their
sixty-year spans into "dozencades" or twelve-year
In the West, we divide our
year up twelve times by its suns. Each 30 day month has
its own astrological name. Every year our cycle begins anew.
In the East, each year within the twelve-year dozencade
has its own animal name. At the end of each twelve-year
period the Chinese cycle begins anew.
The twelve occidental months
have celestial sign names: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer,
Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius,
Pisces. The twelve oriental years have animal sign names:
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey,
Rooster, Dog, Pig. In both cases the astrological sign name
refers to the character of people born under its influence.
The cycles of names always repeat in the same order.
So, in fact, everybody in
the world has not just one, but two main astrological signs:
a Western "month" sign and an Oriental "year"
sign. One sign is complementary to the other. Taken together,
they show us more about the individual than either one can
on its own. In the New Astrology, if someone is born in
Aries and is also born in a Horse year, that person's New
Astrology sign is Aries/Horse. Aries/Horses, as you will
see, are not the same as Aries/Cats or Aries/Tigers.
There are 144 New Astrology
signs. Each is a combined East/West sign. Through the New
Astrology we can learn to get along better with our friends,
family and loved ones. We can find out why we tend not to
harmonize with certain people. We can improve our knowledge
of them, and of ourselves.
Western and Chinese Astrology Ruling Elements:
Western astrology uses four
Fire, Air, Earth, Water. Each
Western astrological sign is ruled by one of these elements:
* Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.
* Fire signs are characterized by Movement, Obsession, Energy.
* Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.
* Air signs are characterized by Receptiveness, Intellect,
* Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.
* Earth signs are characterized by Function, Practicality,
* Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces;
* Water signs are characterized by Emotion, Compassion,
Chinese astrology uses five
ruling elements: Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. The
animal signs are governed by only four of these. All five
elements are used elsewhere in Chinese astrology, but for
our purposes in The New Astrology we need only know:
* Positive Metal-Monkey, Dog.
* Negative Metal-Rooster, Pig.
* Positive Water-Rat.
* Negative Water-Ox.
* Positive Wood-Tiger, Dragon
* Negative Wood-Cat.
* Positive Fire-Horse;
* Negative Fire-Snake, Goat.

astrology is ruled by one or more of ten planets or heavenly
bodies. These are the "stars" astrologers are
always said to be gazing at. The planets influence a sign's
character. Your position in the heavens helps to predict

Are the Yin and the Yang Qualities
Yes. In Chinese astrology,
yin and yang are qualities. But yin and yang are far more
powerful than our qualities because yin and yang are the
two major and only forces in the Chinese philosophical universe.
For them, everything present in the universe is either yin
or else it is yang. Everything. Tables, chairs, light bulbs,
cousins, aunts, uncles and kitchen sinks!
In a way, yin and yang can
be compared, in Western culture, to the application in certain
languages of the qualities of "masculine" or "feminine"
to inanimate objects or intangible nouns. Though it does
not seem to make sense, in French a table is feminine. A
log is feminine. A shoe is also feminine. Parks are masculine.
Lakes too. Feet are masculine. So are eyes and foreheads.
But mouths and even teeth are feminine. Worry is masculine.
So are gossip and lipstick and panty hose.
Though we may want to look
for sexual significance in the application of gender to
nouns, there is none. That's what makes it so difficult
to remember from one language to the next whether a noun
is considered masculine or feminine. Is the application
of gender to nouns then perfectly arbitrary? Well, it must
have come from somewhere. But nobody knows exactly how,
when or why.
There are no genders in the
Chinese language. But, without saying how, when or why,
Chinese philosophers can feel whether a thing or a person
or an idea is yin or yang. It's just there. A known fact.
Yin is rooted in the sun. Its goal is darkness. Yang is
rooted In the Earth. Its goal is light.
Like everything else, each
Chinese animal sign is either yin or yang.
YIN: Rat, Ox, Monkey, Cat,
YANG: Horse, Goat, Tiger,
Rooster, Dragon, Snake
What is Yin and What is Yang?
The Chinese say that yin
people are mainly interested in what happens in groups.
They are frequently preoccupied with the organization of
collective or communal events. They are attracted to politics.
They are self-confident. They trust nobody. They need success
to survive. They worship efficiency. They are always questing
after well-being for themselves and for those they love
or like. They have good health and long life but may be
prone to accidents. They don't smile a lot. They dress conservatively.
They are not spiritual. They love their families. They are
The way I see it, yin is
open, civilized, interested in the good of others. Yin likes
parties, feasts, holidays, sex and anything else that provides
it with intense company. Yin is not feminine. But it is
sometimes said to be subjective. Yin is active in the world.

people are loners. They are individualistic. They are meditative.
They are spiritual. They smile a lot. They have no sense
of groups or family. They have delicate health. They like
to dress for show. They avoid chains of command. They love
nature. They are nonmaterial. Their only goal in life is
personal development. They are objective. They keep their

Your Sun Sign (Western Astrology)
Your Sun sign is Cancer.
Month: Approximately June
22 to July 23.
Cancer is the fourth sign
of the occidental zodiac.
Characteristics of Cancerians:
IMAGINATION, AFFECTION, INSIGHT,
CARING, TENACITY, CAUTION.
Cancerian sins may include:
AVARICE, POSSESSIVENESS, IRRITABILITY, MOODINESS, DESPONDENCY,
Emotion is your pitfall.
As changeable as the Moon, you may shift in minutes from
a stable, normal, "happy" individual into a victim
of deep navy blue feelings of gloom and doom. There's a
quality of charming despair in your moodiness which can
not only break hearts, but can sometimes actually win them.
You make a fabulous partner for home-loving people. Your
nest is where you feel safest and at your most secure. As
security is the main preoccupation of most Cancers, a good
home with comfy furnishings, a few kids and dogs and a built-in
wall safe are about the best things that can happen to you.
In this atmosphere of cushions and curtains you thrive.
For the Cancer subject, home is love is home is love, etc.
Cancers are good at making
money; you hold executive positions and assume responsibilities
with aplomb. You will rarely find a poor-but-happy Cancer.
You seldom decide to throw it all in and become a hippie
or a freelance bohemian. You don't necessarily like the
system or the constraints it places on you, but of all the
signs of the Occidental zodiac, you are the most capable
of placing nose to dull old grindstone and keeping it there.
You want comfort for yourself, but you also enjoy providing
for your family in a generous way.
Cancers are traditionalists.
You may have hung portraits of your dour-looking grandparents,
which you dug out of the attic because nobody else wanted
them. They will surely be framed in antique frames and will
hold the place or honor in your heart. You prefer antiques
to formica and long for your son or daughter to become a
doctor, a lawyer or a sure-fire accountant.
You know what loyalty and
devotion mean. You usually make your friends young and keep
them for life. And, as you are fairly steadfast, you are
easily hurt if the friends in question do not return your
devotion. You will forgive, but you never forget.
If someone asked me to describe
the worst aspect of Cancer subjects, I would not say "moods"
or "crabbiness." Instead I would have to speak
of the Cancer's tendency to hypersensitivity. You are easily
offended and susceptible to criticism theway six-year-olds
are susceptible to chicken pox. A tiny word of criticism
can bring on one of your legendary moods, and the criticizer
may go on the black list for quite a long time.
You are jealous too. You
own the people you live with and are possessive to a fault
about your loved ones. You are not, however, tyrannical
about this weakness. The idea is not "I bought you
and therefore I own you." No. It's more like "I
love you so much and care so profoundly that I cannot believe
you dared be attracted to that other (less serious) person."
You are also easily hurt by cutting remarks. In love, you
give your all. It's impossible for you to understand someone
who doles out their love in tiny eye-dropper doses. Your
Chinese Astrology Sign
Your Chinese animal sign is
Dog is Yin. Dog is the eleventh
sign of the Chinese horoscope.
Dogs have the following characteristics:
CONSTANCY DUTY HEROISM INTELLIGENCE
Dog sins may include: UNEASINESS
CYNICISM CRITICISM UNSOCIABILITY SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS TACTLESSNESS.
People born in Dog years
spend much of their time in an advanced state of suspicious
outrage. You think the evil world is plotting against you,
that the world is a dreadful place to live in, and that
it's up to you to put things to rights. Dogs are crusaders.
Give a you a cause to campaign for and you'll unearth every
bone you've buried for the last ten years in order to see
that justice is done. Thorough, diligent, faithful, honest,
loyal and devoted - all of the above apply to you.
Even at your grumpiest, you
are a lovable, if somewhat intractable, beast. You cannot
be bothered with trifles because you are intensely involved
in constructing an airtight case for some lawsuit.
Poor Doggie, you drag yourself
away from your desk, and you need to be loved. You seek
comfort and understanding. You sit down at the knee of your
favorite companion and lay your furry head in a welcoming
lap. Your big liquid eyes stare beseechingly upward.
Because of the crusader side
to your character, you are often found in jobs where helping
others makes up a large part of your responsibility. You
are a nurse or doctor or lawyer or architect - or poet.
But you are usually not a politician or gangster. Dogs don't
take to crime. You are not after easy gain. You just want
a quiet life with a nice family where you will be left undisturbed
by the roiling world of scandal and scum.
Trouble is, Dogs are so busy
rescuing others and caring about causes, they forget to
take care of Number One. You don't look out for your own
interests and are surprised and hurt when you realize you've
been double-crossed or taken to the cleaners by ruthless
characters. You even get a look of hurt on your face, a
perplexed near frown that says, "Don't hit me again,
I'm sorry. I'll be quiet. I won't chew up slippers anymore."
It's adorably touching.
This air of the beaten Dog
is endearing. People are attracted to you. You are a nice,
friendly, loving soul. Only thing though, you have frequent
attacks of snappishness. The most placid peace-loving Dog
person may suddenly blurt, "Why do you wear you hair
like that?!" Dogs must play a lot of "catch-up"
because they simply can't keep their yaps shut.
You are basically too nice
to be really nasty. But you are critical and very cutting.
You reason too much, take things to pieces instead of looking
at them globally, and avoid fancy because you fear it. You
are not mean though. Basically, you are afraid of your own
shadow. You lack confidence and are terminally restless.
Dogs might be said to blame
others for your own shortcomings. We all know that our failings
are always partially our own fault. Not Dogs. You frequently
cry victim and must be made to cop to your mistakes. You
have tons of charm and masses of ability. You are noble,
upstanding, moral and generous. You make a terrific mate
for those who have a mission or want to spend all their
Your Chinese and Western Astrology
You are a Cancer/Dog. The
description below applies to you.
The Attributes of Cancer are:
IMAGINATION AVARICE INSIGHT
IRRITABILITY TENACITY DESPONDENCY AFFECTION POSSESSIVENESS
CARING MOODINESS CAUTION HYPERSENSITIVITY. "I feel"
Water, Moon, Cardinal.
The Attributes of Dog are:
CONSTANCY UNEASINESS UNSOCIABILITY
CRITICISM RESPECTABILITY DUTY SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS CYNICISM
INTELLIGENCE HEROISM TASTELESSNESS MORALITY. "I worry"
Positive Metal, Yin.
Omnipresent are feelings.
Emotions run both deep and high in your character. Cancer/Dogs
seem to carry a blinking sensor-beam radar system on your
very skins. Everything affects you and affects you profoundly.
A word, a glance, or - God forbid - a harsh remark can dissolve
you into a heap of nervous prostration in a wink. You are
born to be artistic. Touched by the magic wand of aestheticism,
you need protection from the big bad world and its vicissitudes.
You are born innocently sensitive and long to be able to
remain so all the days of your life.
Despite your hyper receptivity
to stimuli from the outside, you do get on in life. You
secure jobs and have children and take care of business
in a serious and competent manner. You get involved in complex
and difficult schemes and are always attracted to the most
baroque of problems, which you set about solving with quiet
The most intricate circumstances
in all your complexity and labyrinthine turns do not daunt
you one bit. You burn midnight oil, smoke too many cigarettes
and worry through dense thickets of ideas and plans till
you sort out a brilliant solution. Even the least of Cancer/Dogs
will be drawn to improving on life's scenery. You love to
garden, redecorate, and plan buildings, books, paintings,
and musical compositions. You are both creatively and technically
Worry is your main hobby.
You fret over any and everything that comes along. You panic
and grow anxious at the least missed appointment or deadline.
You agonize over the exhibition of your works and stay awake
nights gnawing at yourself over whether or not the woman
in the department store who sold you the paint brushes was
lying when she said the brushes were real sable. You can
fuss over minor and petty detail. For a Cancer/ Dog the
air you breathe is rife with menace. You're careful about
absolutely every part of your existence. But no matter how
cautious you try to be, life persists in surprising you.
As a result of your excessively
wary approach, you sometimes give the impression of being
painted into your own corner. Are you afraid of your own
shadow? Are you a little paranoid? To tell you the truth,
I think you are. The average Cancer/Dog has one finger on
the panic button at all times - and it shows. "Did
I turn off the gas? Fill out the tax form? Send in the check?
Get the oil checked?" Your mind churns with preoccupation
over doing "the right thing".
Being on the alert all the
time does not, however, stop you from being entirely reasonable
and enormously just in your dealings with others. If you
believe in someone you will go to the limits of your ability
to bring succor to them. Your capacity for empathy is enormous
and your sixth sense about what is right and meet in any
given situation is always accurate.
The Cancer/Dog is a giver,
too. You're generous and kindly and because you want very
much for others to measure up to the heights of self-sacrifice
of which you are capable, you are adorably encouraging to
the people you love. Patient and gentle and good, you make
an ideal partner. If you are involved with others, whether
in business or in some artistic project, you are never after
the fame or the glory of success for yourself. You merely
want to get on with making something wonderful happen. You
are anything but egomaniacal, but because you place beauty
and rectitude so high on your list of priorities, your goals
may seem selfish or demanding.
Fact is, Dogs born in Cancer
are not really of this world. Left to your own devices,
you would probably manage very well to set yourself up in
a cave somewhere, get yourself some books and papers, and
invite along some pets to love you - and maybe a mate to
admire - and keep yourself busy with many useful and beautiful
The special province of Cancer/Dog
people is your uncanny ability to love others. Although
harmony won't necessarily invest your every affair, you
are the one who is making the most real effort to keep things
on an even keel. A snappish person, you are often on edge
and seem cranky when you're really just insecure about something.
Your need for true affection and tenderness is imperative
to your very physical health. Love really does make your
world go round.
You cannot live well without
loving. You must have an object for your bottomless well
of emotion. Without somebody to shower with indulgence and
admiration, you will be tempted to give up, lie down and
waste away. You must be loyal and faithful to another soul,
and you will feel awful if you dare betray said lover. You
thrive on the emotional tension between yourself and your
partner in any love relationship. Without the daily thrill
of feeling love for someone, you skulk about looking whipped
and sorrowful. With Cancer/Dogs it's all or nothing.
You will get along with Taurus,
Virgo and Pisces/Cats. Taurus, Scorpio and Virgo/Tigers
are strong favorites as well. Horses born in Scorpio might
irritate you, but almost any other Horse will be a good
bet. You admire the Horse's capacity for hard work and self
abnegation. Aries, Libra and/or Capricorn/Dragons and Goats
unnerve you. As for Aries/Pigs - forget it! They are creative,
but they want to be boss, and everybody knows that's your
HOME AND FAMILY:
Of course, you will invariably
abide in loveliness. Beautiful surroundings are essential
to you anyway. Cancers of all persuasions need to make homes
and are born with the nesting instinct. You, whose dogged
pursuit of the aesthetic know no frontiers, will automatically
want to evolve in a safe and secure, beautiful and well-designed
Your family is everything
to you. But, as I said earlier, sometimes you seem absent
or distant from your natural emotional ties. The truth is,
no matter what you are preoccupied by, you're always most
at ease and feel best when there are family members about.
You may be writing the greatest novel of all time or painting
a masterpiece in your hermetically sealed studio, but you
are listening for the friendly noises of family life below
stairs. The smells and sound of everyday existence keep
your feet on the ground. As parent you are dutiful and kindly.
The life's work of Cancer/Dogs
is cut out for you at birth. Learning how to apply sensitivity
and creative talents to life in a modern world is as large
a chunk as anyone can be expected to bite off. Directing
and molding talent into workable forms will take a lot of
your time and energy You cannot be expected to work in a
bank or to take orders in a hamburger joint. You will not
be fulfilled by any impersonal work. Embellishing life is
what you do best.
for Cancer/Dog will be found in these fields:
Were I to hire you, I would
never worry that you'd be late for work or forget to add
up a column of figures. You are hyper conscientious, so
I would let you make your own schedule and encourage you
to work weekends and take off during the week if it pleased
you. You know the value of money and are careful to maintain
your accounts and keep your debts to a minimum. Not only
do you make excellent workers in areas where your creativity
is challenged, but you can even be bosses - and good ones
- provided the area in which you're called upon to exert
authority is an attractive one where your talents are used
to the fullest extent. You can direct operations on a building
site, as long as the building is the Louvre or the Taj Mahal
or a cathedral on top of a mountain. To be worthwhile, life
must be beautiful. We already know that you would make an
excellent artist of any variety. You can also try dealing
in antiques or paintings, or even agenting for painters.
